In a massive crackdown on sandalwood gangs, the Andhra Pradesh Task Force Police arrested two sandalwood smugglers on Wednesday. On this occasion, the police seized 30 red sandalwood logs. The market value of red sandalwood logs is around Rs. 50 lakh, it reported today.
Task Force SP - M. Sundar Rao said that the police team conducted the operation based on the information. A person was spotted moving suspiciously at the railway track near Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The police caught him and identified him as Tirupati Subrahmanyam (30) and searched the area after finding ten red sandalwood logs.
On further investigation, he told the police that he tried to smuggle red sandalwood logs along with his cousin Satish, on which the police found another 20 sandal logs hidden at Chikigutta. A case has been registered and investigation is underway.
Recently Baitarayanapura police in Bengaluru spent Red sandalwood weighing 1,693 kg was seized. Rs 2.68 crores. Police arrested a gang of five smugglers and also seized two two-wheelers used in the crime during the raid, reported.
The team carried out raids based on accurate information. The police have been alerted due to the possibility of red sandalwood being sold in the New Timber Yard layout. The police first nabbed Vinod, a resident of Kamakshipalaya, along with the driver, and recovered about 17.5 kg of red sandalwood from him.
Vinod revealed that Ajay hired him to sell red sandalwood and smugglers in Andhra Pradesh used his residence in Hesaraghta to hide their stock.
