Indian ace Vishwanathan Anand’s mastery over his opponents goes unabated and he tops world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in the fifth round of the classical section of the Norwegian Chess Tournament which started on Monday.
After defeating the Norwegian superstar in the Blitz event before the classical division, Anand won the thrilling Armageddon (Sudden Death Game) after the regular match ended in a 40-move draw.
At Armageddon, 52-year-old Anand recreates old magic when he surprises Carlsen with 50 moves to win. With 10 points in his kitty, he topped the prestigious tournament with the best players in the Indian GM sport with four more rounds.
Anand started the classical division with three wins in a row, defeating Maxim Wachier-Lagrave (France), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and Hao Wang (China), while American Wesley So ended his series in the fourth round.
Carlsen is second with 9.5 points despite losing to his longtime rival. So, he shared third place with Shakhtar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), who had previously won the Blitz category, with 8.5 points. In the fifth round, he went to Mammediorov over Armageddon.
In the fifth round, Anish Giri (Netherlands) and Norway's Aryan Tari defeated Timor Radzabov (Azerbaijan) and Hao Wang respectively. Frenchman Maxim Vachier-Lagrave won the Sudden Death Game with veteran Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) in another match to increase his score to 7 points. In the current Norwegian chess tournament, players participate in an armageddon (sudden death) if they are drawn in a classical game.
