Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed the officials to take strict action against mobile loan applications that do not comply with Reserve Bank of India norms. The Chief Minister's orders came a few hours after a couple committed suicides in Rajamahendravaram under the pressure of loan apps agents to settle their debt.
The couple has been identified as Kolli Durga Rao (35) and Ramyalakshmi (30). They have two children: Tejaswi Nagasai (4) and Likhita Sri (2). Rajamahendravaram DSP Sreelatha said that Durga Rao had moved to Rajamahendravaram ten years ago from Labbarti village in Alluri Sitaramaraju district (formerly Visakhapatnam district). He married Ramya six years ago and lives in Anand Nagar.
Durga Rao was a tailor by profession, but he also did painting work to earn extra money. He has received from two loan apps Rs. 30,000 as a loan and partially settled the loan, the police said, adding that "for the past few days, the operators have been threatening Durga Rao to send videos of Ramya morphing to his relatives".
On Wednesday, the couple dropped their children at a relative's house while returning from a function in Mogaltur of East Godavari district. He took a room in a lodge and ended his life there. Before taking the extreme step, Ramya calls her brother-in-law Rajesh.
She informed him of her decision and requested him to take care of their children.
Rajesh went to the lodge and found the couple unconscious on the bed. They were taken to the local government hospital where they died while undergoing treatment. DSP Srilatha said that the II-Town police have started an investigation.
