AP govt decides to focus on cancer and anemia

By Our Special Correspondent

With Andhra Pradesh recording a significant increase in the cost of cancer treatments in the last seven years, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed the health department to establish oncology department in all medical colleges of the state.

The decision taken at the review meeting of the Health and Family Welfare Department on Tuesday will be applicable to the new medical colleges currently being set up in the state.

Build and strengthen government healthcare facilities in the state and people can avail Arogyasree services in our hospitals. It will be a win-win situation for the state if we establish oncology departments in all medical colleges for prevention and treatment. Help us with more PG seats along with resources to treat patients in government facilities," said the Chief Minister.

Health department officials informed the Chief Minister that since 2015, the state expenditure on cancer treatment has increased four times. They said that the state government has created 1, 40,639 virtual accounts under the Arogyasree scheme for the people availing the services. The treatment amount is then auto-debited in the hospital accounts.

Taking this as a challenge, the officials were asked to monitor the performance of Anganwadi Centers to work towards the complete elimination of anemia in Andhra Pradesh. "Like complete nutrition, provide protein kits to severely anemic patients," the chief minister added.

"Give incentives to doctors to be recruited in rural and tribal areas. No one should say that recruitment of doctors is pending. Take all necessary help and do whatever is necessary to recruit and retain doctors in government hospitals and Clinics," said the Chief Minister.
