BFI shows interest to host next year’s world meet

By Our Special Correspondent

A few days ago, the International Boxing Association (IBA) began the bidding process for the World Boxing Tour (WBT) events for 2023-24. The World Organization is looking to host six WBT events across the continent during this period. These events are so massive that they provide crucial Olympic qualification points.

The country's governing body, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), is also reportedly planning to hold a key event next year. Although still in its infancy, there are rumors that the federation is showing interest in hosting the Women's World Championships next year. The event will also be a qualifying event.

Although not yet an official bid, the newspaper understands that the BFI has already indicated its interest in the IBA. At present, however, nothing can be said for sure and it is impossible to predict future activity while the IBA is still struggling to save the game.

Following the final phase of the McLaren Global Sport Solutions (MGSS) research results (published June 20), the IBA is still a long way from regaining its status. The World Boxing Governing Body lost its International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition ahead of last year's Olympics.

In addition, following a recent Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling, the IBA may have to re-run the election. After the CAS development, IBA Chief Omar Kremlev said, "I wrote a letter to the board of directors today (one day after the CAS ruling) recommending that new elections be held."

The IBA Board of Directors will meet in Lausanne on Friday to discuss the way forward. The IBA also discusses WBT and the eligibility policies in place. Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, who was elected chair of the IBA Athletes Committee, is expected to attend a keynote meeting.

Boxers set for Ireland tour The Indian boxers, who are part of the Commonwealth Games, are expected to travel to Ireland on July 10 for an exposure tour ahead of the quarterly event. With the CWG set to take place in Birmingham, this tour will be an ideal venue for those like Nikhat Zareen. Apart from India, many lists from other countries will also be participating.

The women's team includes Nikhat, along with Lovlina, Neetu and Jaismeen. A total of eight men will take part in the event.
