Empty poll promises can hurt Guj: Shah’s dig at AAP

By Our Special Correspondent

In an indirect attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday warned the youth of Gujarat not to be swayed by the promises of other political parties as doing so could destroy the state's progress.

Shah was on a one-day visit to Ahmedabad, where he attended several events, including the inauguration of smart schools. On this occasion, he lashed out at AAP.

“There are two types of people. The second type are those who toil for five years in Quthbullapur, contest elections through political parties, buy new clothes five months before the elections and start making promises for votes. But the people of Gujarat are well aware of the second type of people. Shah also drew a contrast between the Congress and BJP rules in the state.

During Congress rule, curfew was imposed in Ahmedabad for 200 days a year and communal riots were common. But after BJP came to power, curfew has become obsolete and children born after 2002 don't even know what curfew is, he said.

He also drew attention to the state of education in Gujarat, saying, “Under BJP rule, the dropout ratio in primary education has reduced from 37 percent to 3 percent. The number of children studying primary education has increased from 40 percent to 95 percent.

Later in the day, he inaugurated the sixth All India Prison Duty Meet, organized by the Bureau of Police Research and Development, which will be attended by police personnel from 19 states and union territories.

Addressing the gathering, Shah said that there is a need for a change in the society's attitude towards prisons.

“Not everyone who goes to jail is a criminal by nature. Sometimes there are circumstances that push them,” he said, talking about the need for prison reforms. In the evening, he inaugurated the anthem and mascot of the 36th National Games in Ahmedabad.

Shah said that after becoming the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi took initiatives like 'Kanya Kelavani' and 'Gunotsav' to increase the enrollment ratio to 100 per cent and brought the dropout ratio to almost zero.
