Food testing lab to come up at SV University

Department of Home Science and Food Technology at SV University has bagged an Rs 10 crore project sponsored by AP Food Processing Society. Through this, the society supports the establishment of a state-of-the-art National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accredited food testing laboratory under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) scheme.

A letter has been written to the CEO of AP Food Processing Society Prof. K Raja Reddy that it is intended to set up a laboratory, laboratory equipment and machinery with civil structures with a grant of 10 crores. As the university offers food technology and allied courses at UG and PG level, this advanced facility will be a real help for teaching and research.

Further, it has innumerable food processing units of all sizes in the nearby districts which could facilitate third party testing in the proposed lab, which would also be an additional source of income for the university. The Vice Chancellor said that under this project, the Department of Food Technology is linked with food production industries and a Food Production Research Center will be set up under the Department of Home Science.

This center tests and certifies the quality of farmers' food products and processed food products of industries. It facilitates easy export of food products. Registrar Professor O Md Hussain said that the products which are not stored for a long time will be processed in a special way at the centre.

Project Coordinator Dr KV Sucharita said that they had applied for the project in 2019 and it got delayed due to covid. Projects like these help to control wastage of food products and a lab like this is an honor for SVU.
