Former MP Geetha gets 5yrs RI for Cheating PNB of Rs 42crore

Araku constituency BJP leader and former MP Kothapalli Geetha and her husband Rama Koteswara Rao were sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by a special CBI court on Wednesday in the case of defrauding the public sector bank Punjab National Bank 42.79crores.

Geetha and Koteshwar Rao have been charged with three other offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for which they are liable to undergo the same term of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh as fine.

The former MP was charged with defrauding a bank by submitting false documents to obtain a loan for Visveswara Infrastructure Pipet Limited (VIPL).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR in 2015 and investigated the case. The investigating agency finally filed the charge sheet on February 17, 2021.

Ramakoteswara Rao is the Managing Director of the company. The company also diverted the loan for other sanctioned purposes.

Geetha was elected as an MP from the ST reserved Araku Lok Sabha constituency on a YSR Congress Party ticket in the 2014 general elections. She launched a political party called Jana Jagruti in August 2018 with the aim of challenging caste politics in Andhra Pradesh.

In 2018, she floated political party Jana Jagruti. She later joined the BJP and merged her party with it.
