Governor Biswa Bhushan Harichandan said that Pingali Venkaiah was a great freedom fighter and the national flag designed by him is a gift to the country which is synonymous with the spirit of free and independent India.
To mark the 146th birth anniversary of Pingali Venkaiah, he was the chief guest at a conference on 'Tiranga the Integration - Sahitya Portrayal of the National Flag in Indian Languages' organized by the Sahitya Akademi at PB Siddhartha College here on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Harichandan recalled the incidents of Pingali Venkaiah presenting Mahatma Gandhi with the first design of the Swaraj flag, which brought recognition to the country and the people at the meeting of the Indian National Congress held in Vijayawada in March 1921.
He said that on the occasion of Pingali Venkaiah's 75th birthday, Prime Minister Modi's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' initiative to bring the tiranga from house to house and fly it from August 13 to 15 is a fitting tribute to him. Regarding India's independence, the Governor said that the national flag represents the hopes and aspirations of the people of the country and is a symbol of our national pride.
He said that now we are honoring the freedom fighters that fought for the freedom of the country and our aim is to make the entire nation proud of the way freedom was achieved under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Governor recalled the program he participated in recently along with the Prime Minister to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Manyam Veeru Alluri Sitaramaraj in Bhimavaram and unveiled the hologram of freedom movement leader Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
