World number one Iga Swaiatek won her second Grand Slam title of the year by defeating fifth seed Ones Jabir in the US Open 2022 women's singles final on Sunday (India time).
The 21-year-old Pole won the final major trophy of the season at Flushing Meadows, New York, winning 6-2 7-6 (7-5) in one hour and 52 minutes. She is already a two-time French Open champion.
Jabir, 28, also lost in the Wimbledon final in July. A Tunisian player became the first woman from Africa to win a Grand Slam title.
Sviatek has won nine of its finals without dropping a single set. Jabir's joint career-high WTA ranking of second place will see her continue as world number one.
"It's something I definitely didn't expect. Its confirmation for me that the sky's the limit," said Switek, who is 55-7 in tour-level matches with seven trophies in 2022.
Sviatek became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to win seven titles in a single season. "I'm proud. Also surprised little bit," she added.
She is also the first woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win two major titles in the same season.
"She really set the bar very high. It's great for our sport," said Jabir, the first African woman and the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final.
Spain's Carlos Alcaraz will take on Norway's Casper Rudd in Monday's men's singles final. Both players are chasing their maiden Grand Slam title as well as the world number one ranking.
