India was on Wednesday one of the UM Award for Hypertension Control Initiative. The initiative is a large-scale intervention under the National Health Mission (NHAM).

The India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI), a large-scale hypertension intervention under the National Health Mission, has been recognized for its exceptional work in India's existing primary healthcare system.

Announcing the win, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted, “India has won UN Award for Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) – a large-scale hypertension intervention in the existing primary health care system under the National Health Mission. IHCI reinforces Prime Minister @NarendraModi Ji's mission to ensure health & well-being for all.

The program was launched in 2017 and expanded in phases to cover more than 130 districts in 23 states. According to government data, at least 3.4 million people are being treated for hypertension in government health facilities, including Ayushman Bharat Health Wellness Centers (HWCs).

IHCI won the '2022 UN Interagency Task Force and WHO Special Program on Primary Health Care Award' at the UN General Assembly side event in New York, USA yesterday. The award recognizes India's outstanding commitment and action to prevent and control non-communicable diseases and provide comprehensive people-centered primary care.

Appreciating the healthcare initiative, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya in a tweet said the IHCI has strengthened Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mission to provide health and well-being for all. He said the government is committed to building a healthy and fit India.

"Hypertension kills more adults than any other cause. Treatment of people at high-risk of CVD is one of the best buys recommended by WHO, and scaling up hypertension treatment and control could save millions of lives over the next decade," said RodericoHOfrin WHO representative for India.
