Suella Braverman, a Conservative Party member of parliament from Fareham in south-east England, was named the UK's new home secretary on Tuesday, succeeding fellow Indian-origin Priti Patel.
The 42-year-old barrister, who until now served as attorney general in Boris Johnson's government, is one of the first contenders to throw his hat into the ring to replace Johnson as Tory leader and prime minister.
Braver man was appointed Home Secretary by newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss.
"I want to take the chances of Brexit and fix these problems... and cut taxes," said braver man, a leading member of the pro-Brexit wing of the Conservatives who want a clear break from Europe, including taking the UK out of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
She recounts her personal migration story as the London-born daughter of Uma, a Hindu Tamil mother, and Christy Fernandes, a Goan-origin father, who immigrated to the UK from Mauritius and Kenya respectively in the 1960s.
“Liz is now ready to be prime minister. She doesn't need to learn on the job. And the work is hard and must be done right. The party has had a difficult six years and stability is needed urgently and fast," Braver man said of his future boss in Downing Street.
The Cambridge University law graduate married Rael Braver man in 2018 and brought about an overdue legal change last year to allow her to be a cabinet minister while she was away on maternity leave to give birth to their second child.
