Hundreds of students of the private Chandigarh University on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway staged a late-night protest on Saturday after a female student shared offensive videos of other students widely on the internet.
They said a case was registered against the woman at the Kharar (Sadar) police station for voyeurism under Section 66E (punishment for breach of privacy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 354C of the Information Technology Act.
Mohali DC Amit Talwar said in a press conference that there was "no truth" in the claims of suicide attempt. He added that some of the girls had fainted and were given medical attention.
The female student who allegedly leaked the videos was also accused of demanding money from others for not leaking them. When the matter came to know, the students came out of the hostels and protested.
Mohali SSP Vivek Sheel told Soni that the woman had admitted to sending her photographs to her friend, but they were confirming whether she had also sent pictures of other girls.
Soni, later in a press conference, said, “I want to make it clear that we have not got any video of other women. We are also not giving a clean chit to anyone. We have arrested the main accused and seized the equipment.
In a special press conference, Punjab Women's Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati said that the issue will be looked into closely. She said that the warden will also be questioned. Assuring that the investigation would be completed within a week, Gulati said the hostels would be inspected.
She said that harassment complaints will also be looked into in all universities across the state.
On the other hand, the university officials said that the building has recently been converted into a girls' hostel. As per the guidelines, no male members are allowed in the girl’s hostel. If the maintenance personnel come in, they will be issued a gate pass and accompanied by the warden.
Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains appealed to the protesting students to remain calm, saying "no one will spare the criminals". Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh has requested people not to forward unverified news of Meet Heyer and promised justice to the students.
