Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the BJP to expand its constituency by advising the party to grow its constituency for equal development of non-Hindu marginalized sections of society, such as the Pasmandas among Muslims.
He mentioned this at the BJP's national executive meeting during a presentation by the unit in UP, where the party recently bagged the Muslim-majority Lok Sabha seats of Rampur and Azamgarh, hitherto held by the Samajwadi Party.
The advice could serve as a course correction, as was done after a recent hate speech by a party worker led to riots across the country. As the party gears up to face elections in minority-dominated states like J&K and Telangana, the message is to make the party more inclusive. He also called for a Sneha Yatra (fraternity trip) to promote affection and harmony in the society. This is what he said at the meeting of party office bearers held last year.
In his closing speech, Modi said the party's mission was to bring India out of tushitkaram (appeasement) and lead to the goal of sabka vikas (development for all).
Now the country is fed up with hereditary parties and politics of appeasement, the opposition lashed out. Former Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted the Prime Minister as saying that it is difficult for such political parties to survive for long as people want activist politics.
Ultimately Modi advises to learn from the failures of parties in decline instead of mocking them.
In contrast, Modi said BJP is democratic. That is why the statue of unity was built in Patel's memory even though he was a NDA Congress leader. He called for a P2 to G2 (people-friendly good governance) policy in the party's political and governance model.
