By Our Special Correspondent

National Family Day, celebrated on September 26, focuses on the people who make our lives meaningful. A family come in many shapes and sizes and in different situations, but what they all share is unconditional love and support for those growing on the same family tree.

From nuclear family units to extended clans, families can drive us crazy and make life worth living. Take some time today to appreciate the special people in your life — call them, take them out to dinner, or send them a note to let them know you're thinking of them!

The family unit is an indispensable part of human society. At its core, the family is composed of parents, siblings, grandparents, and cousins, as well as biological relatives such as spouses, children, and in-laws. Social relations, expectations and dynamics between these kin vary over time and space. Today, Americans are getting married at 28 years later than ever before.

The nuclear family unit – parents and children – typically make up most Western households. In other cultures, extended families share homes and adult children are expected to care for their aging parents and relatives.

Scientific study of the family unit began in the late 19th century and crystallized as a subsection of sociology in the 1960s. Since then, sociologists have paid particular attention to the role of the family in shaping individual behavior and how place and culture influence family structures.

According to psychologists, family relationships are critical to healthy development. Research shows that the quality of family relationships has significant effects on well-being. Strong family relationships can withstand stress, help us process trauma, and boost our self-esteem.

Since family is such an important structure for people around the world, it makes perfect sense to set aside a day to appreciate and bond with the important people in our lives.
