NTR Health varsity name change likely to affect students

By Our Special Correspondent

The state government's decision to change the name of Dr. NTR Health University to Dr. YSR Health University is likely to have an impact on MBBS students who pass out from the university and want to pursue higher education abroad.

Besides, the decision has to be approved by the Indian Medical Association, National Medical Council, University Grants Commission and other bodies related to medical education.

According to university officials, administratively there may not be much change in the activities of the university.

Students who passed out from NTR Health University and applied for PG courses in other countries such as US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany etc. have to face problems because when those universities send the documents for verification, the university says that Dr. NTR Health University is no more, now it is Dr. YSR Health University. .

These countries have not yet recognized the university's new name. They have to go through the procedure for re-identification and it takes a lot of time.

Dr. NTR University was formed 35 years ago and many institutions around the world know about it. So, students in other countries never face any problems. It may take several months or years for them to recognize a new name.

Till then, IMA state president Dr. C Srinivasaraju said that the students will face difficulties as they will have to show the name change documents, copy of the amendment bill, governor's approval and other proofs.

He told that the National Medical Council, formerly known as the Medical Council of India, is the monitoring authority for medical colleges in the country.

The state government has to send the name change details to the NMC which maintains the list of medical colleges and universities in the country. NMC should also accept and recognize the name change.
