The coffin of Britain's longest-reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II arrived at Edinburgh Palace on Sunday after a six-hour journey from her summer home in the Scottish Highlands, passing tens of thousands of mourners along the way, many silent, some clapping and others in tears.
Her coffin was moved from Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire to her official Scottish residence at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8 at the age of 96.
King Charles III will travel to Edinburgh on Monday to join his siblings as his mother Queen Elizabeth's coffin is carried in a stately procession from one of her Scottish palaces to the city's historic St Giles Cathedral. The King will join senior royals for a vigil at the church where the coffin rests before it is flown to London on September 13.
Separately, US President Joe Biden accepted a British invitation to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. "This morning, President Biden formally accepted an invitation to attend Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral service on September 19," the White House said in a statement Sunday. "He will be accompanied by the First Lady," it said.
