TS Governor reaches out to victims of botched sterilization surgery

By Our Special Correspondent

Moved by the plight of 11 women who underwent family planning surgery at the primary health center in Ibrahimpatnam on August 25, Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan met them on Sunday and extended moral and financial support.

Being a doctor herself, she patiently listened to each and every one. Noticing that the patients were in extreme pain and shock and needed some support, she immediately sanctioned a financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each from her discretionary grants.

She inquired about the care and facilities being provided to them in the hospital and assured them of all possible assistance from the Raj Bhavan.

Governor Tamilisai said that due to the pressure on the surgeons to perform more operations in a limited time, the family planning operations went wrong, and as a result, the women who underwent the procedure at the Ibrahimpatnam PHC were getting infected.

She said that there is a need to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. She said that she will write a letter to the state government in this regard. Earlier in the day, BJP Mahila Morcha activists met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum on various issues faced by women, girls and youth in the state.

While they brought to her notice that drugs and alcohol was rampant in the city, some expressed suspicions about the police's relationship with drug dealers. Mahila Morcha state president K. Geethamoorthy and others have requested the governor to intervene to ensure that the families of the four women who died after the sterilization procedure at Ibrahimpatnam PHC get adequate compensation.

They brought to her attention that there are many government schools in the state where girls are facing lack of basic facilities like drinking water and toilets.
