Bindyarani Devi claimed the silver in the women's 55 kg weightlifting final at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Her silver medal came at the end of an eventful day for India, which saw Mirabai Chanu, Sanket Sagar and Gururaj Poojary all winning medals. Bindyarani’s triumph came in the women’s 55 kg weightlifting final, and marks India's fourth medal at the CWG 2022, currently underway in Birmingham, England.
She won the silver for a 202 kg lift (86 kg snatch and 116 kg clean and jerk - a games record). The gold was claimed by Adijat Adenike Olarinoye of Nigeria for a total lift of 203 kg (92 kg snatch and 111 kg clean and jerk), while the bronze went to Fraer Morrow of England with a total lift of 198 kg (89 kg snatch and 109 kg clean and jerk).
The 23 year old Bindyarani is from Imphal, Manipur, and has trained under Coach Vijay Sharma at NIS Patiala. She began weightlifting in 2013 and came to the attention of selectors after three years of dedicated training, and went on to train at NCOE Imphal from 2016 to 2019. She has since been training at the Indian National Camp in Patiala.
Among her achievements, she also counts silver at the Commonwealth Senior Championships in 2021, gold at the Commonwealth Senior Championships in 2019, and silver at the Commonwealth Junior Championships in 2016.
