West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday oversaw a major reshuffle of her cabinet, dropping four ministers and inducting nine, including former BJP Union minister Babul Supriyo.
In the biggest cabinet reshuffle since her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) came to power in the state for the first time in 2011, Banerjee changed the ministries of almost half of the members of the Council of Ministers.
The cabinet reshuffle was the first since the TMC came to power for a third consecutive term in May last year, with the party facing a crisis after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested senior minister Partha Chatterjee over the school jobs scam.
Suprio has been assigned the portfolio of information technology and electronics, one of Chatterjee's departments. The singer-turned-politician was also given the tourism portfolio.
Shashi Panja and Sowandeb Chattopadhyay were given the portfolios of Industries and Commerce and Parliamentary Affairs respectively, portfolios previously suspended by the party after Chatterjee's arrest.
Paresh Adhikari has been replaced by Satyajit Burman as the new Minister of State for Education. The next person whose name came out in the scandal was spared.
